A fun look into the lives and lifestyles of some of our favorite mamas.
BY CATHERINE HILL
This month I sat down with Megan Kohler, mama to precious Maggie and Landon, to find out what its like to launch a new Linen company with two toddlers at home.
So tell me how Kohler linens came to fruition.
The story of Kohler Linens actually begins 7 years ago. I moved to Dallas after college, and mutual friends set me up on a blind date with my now husband, Bennett. Not only did I quickly hit it off with Bennett, but I became fast friends with his sister, Elizabeth. Elizabeth had been working for a fine linen company in Beverly Hills where she had spent many years working with top interior designers and celebrity clientele, and learning all the intricacies of the industry. She knew the trade and had an eye for beautiful bedding, and I had the passion for design, an eagerness to learn, but still wanted the flexibility to balance motherhood and working. Together Elizabeth and I strive to provide our clients with unparalleled service and personalized luxurious linens.
How have you found balance between being a mom and launching a new company?
Be realistic in your expectations. The house may not always be spotless and the to do list will always have things to do. I try to always get up early before the kids are up to get some work in. I might spend nap time working but I always try to to be present in my time I spend with my littles. When possible, I let my oldest daughter Maggie “help” with small tasks such as gift wrapping up a Kohler Linens present or cleaning up my office area. We still get to spend time together and accomplish a work task at the same time.
What tips do you have for moms wanting to start their own business?
Prepare to be flexible when it comes to a schedule. Things happen. Kids get sick. Some days the kids may not nap so make adjustments as needed during this busy season of life.
Stay organized! This is one I have to work on because it definitely does not come naturally to me. I have found when things are organized it makes everything run much smoother. I always have a list going of tasks and to do’s and if I needed, sometimes I have to prioritize and pick which ones will get completed that day, or delegate and ask for help. Most importantly, take care of you! You have to take care of yourself in order to take care of your family, your business, & home!
How would you describe your style and the way you dress Maggie and Landon?
Growing up, my mom loved to dress my two sisters and me in matching smocked dresses. She passed that love of traditional, timeless classics down to me and even saved some of the dresses I wore for me. I was so excited when I found out I was expecting a baby girl because I couldn’t wait to dress her in some of the very same keepsakes. For Landon I love bubbles and jon jons - and of course it isn’t complete without the white knee high socks and white shoes. My husband sometimes wants Landon in boots and jeans, but I tell him they’re only little for so long.
What is your favorite Dondolo outfit and why?
One of my favorite dondolo outfit is the Arden set. It’s the sweetest dress or bubble but also looks comfortable and I love anything that has even a hint of pink in it!
Being a mom yourself how does it make you feel to know that when you buy Dondolo clothing you are providing warm clothes to needy children in Colombia?
I love that dondolo supports moms in all walks of life and if I have the opportunity to support a company that is providing for women who are struggling to meet the basic needs of their families that is a company I can stand behind 100%.
Name one thing you have gained since being a mom.
I have gained patience, an amazing kind of love, and how to be a better person for them.
What are some of your favorite things to do with the kids in Dallas? (this can be a restaurants, parks, museums, any local spots you guys enjoy)
We spend a lot of afternoons at the park and we love going to the arboretum year round. My husband’s family has a ranch in Sunnyvale so we spend many weekends out there with the horses and golf cart rides having mini “staycations”. It’s a nice way to spend time with the family and it’s close enough to do it often. I grew up in a smaller west Texas town so I love that my kids still get a taste for the country when we go out to Sunnyvale. With the Texas summer coming up we will spend a lot of time at Grandmommys house swimming or the Dallas Country Club pool. I love living in a city that has so many different events and activities for families and children.
What is one thing you hope to teach Maggie and Landon?
More than anything I want them to grow up to be kind and to love God.
